Zadar in December – Unfiltered

The walk begins on the Zadar peninsula, where the sea and sky meet eye to eye. At the Greeting to the Sun and the Sea Organ, places usually crowded in summer, Zadar in December reveals a completely different face – an almost unreal silence. Here, at the very edge of the peninsula, the walk doesn’t begin with steps, but with a gaze. And it lasts as long as it needs to – unhurried, unplanned, with the sea speaking the loudest.

The walk continues towards Poljana Ivana Pavla II. It is a space that carries the silence of centuries and exudes elegance with a view of the sea. The square was named in honor of Pope John Paul II., who visited Zadar on June 9, 2003. During his visit, he led a prayer at the Forum in front of the Church of St. Donatus. Situated next to the ancient Forum and the Church of St. Donatus, the square blends the spiritual, historical, and everyday life. In winter, the space gains extra charm. The stone under the streetlights and the scent of coffee from nearby cafés create a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere.

From there, the route leads to Kalelarga, the city’s main street. It is adorned with subtle lights that reflect the winter glow. These lights give the street warmth and liveliness. Even in silence, the city radiates energy and elegance.

Although the streets in December are quieter than in summer, Zadar is very much alive. Kalelarga and the surrounding streets bustle with people who want to feel the city’s pulse. Tourists are drawn by the city’s intimate charm. Locals live and work here every day. A morning coffee at a favorite café, a chat with a market vendor, or a passerby’s smile makes the city glamorous and warm. This is true even on cold winter days. The peninsula truly has many interesting stores and galleries worth visiting, but I wholeheartedly recommend Galleria Anna on Mihovila Klaića Street. The space is beautifully decorated, every detail thoughtfully designed, and the entire gallery feels like a little balm for the eyes. You can feel the warmth, style, and authenticity, which is why I always enjoy returning and happily recommend it to others.

Enjoy a glass of mulled wine at the Advent market and savor the scent of fritule. If you have time, take a ride on the Christmas train through the city and soak in the lights and decorations. Zadar in December has a special energy that’s worth experiencing and sharing with friends.
