Historical landmarks of Zadar

One of the most famous historical landmarks is the Church of St. Donatus. A recognizable symbol of Zadar and one of the best examples of pre-Romanesque architecture in Croatia. This monumental 9th-century church, built on the foundations of the Roman Forum, offers visitors a unique insight into Zadar’s history.
Nearby is the Roman Forum, an archaeological site from the 1st century. It was once the center of public life in ancient Zadar. Pope John Paul II visited Zadar on June 9, 2003. During his visit, the Pope led a mass right in front of the Church of St. Donatus, a true emblem of Zadar’s history and Christianity.

In the heart of the old town stands the magnificent Cathedral of St. Anastasia. It is the largest cathedral in Dalmatia, built in the Romanesque style. An imposing Renaissance entrance to the city dating back to the 16th century which reflects the Venetian influence on the city’s architecture.

The Sea Organ designed to harness the energy of the sea to create sounds is a unique musical installation. It draws thousands of visitors.
