Ošljak island

Ošljak Island, also known as Lazaret, is located in the Zadar Archipelago. It proudly holds the title of the smallest inhabited island in the Adriatic. Anyone who has set foot on this beautiful island knows it’s a true oasis of peace — so small that you can walk around it in literally half an hour.

Only six to seven people live on the island during the winter, but their community spirit is admirable.
Disagreements may happen, but when something heavy needs carrying, everyone offers help. On Ošljak, unity always overcomes differences — that’s the true strength of this small community. Almost all residents have the surname Valčić, and they are all related to each other.

Another unique aspect of life on the island is the complete absence of cars. They are simply banned, and there’s not even a road. Just a narrow path that encircles the island. There is a local ranger who makes sure the paths remain clear and accessible.

Ošljak Island is a place where the modern pace of life comes to a halt, and nature and tradition take over. From centuries-old olive trees and cypresses, to a 6th-century church, and the crystal-clear sea and silence — Ošljak offers a chance for true rest of both body and soul.
