Nairobi Kenya

January 15, 2025 Blog

Nairobi Kenya is not only the country’s economic and political center but also a place of deep contrasts between modern life and poverty.

Nairobi is a city where progress and poverty intertwine, with a population of around 5.5 million people. One of the most striking aspects of Nairobi is Kibera, the largest slum in Africa. Kibera is home to over a million people, making it one of the largest slums in the world. In this settlement, people live in extremely difficult conditions, with most houses built from improvised materials such as tin and mud. Many Kibera residents lack access to basic utilities like running water, electricity, and sanitation. Despite the challenges, this slum has its own internal dynamics.

The Kenyan government tried to relocate Kibera residents by building apartments. However, the residents rejected this offer, believing it to be a scam. They preferred to remain in their settlement, where they were accustomed to living despite the harsh conditions. Kibera is essentially a “city within a city,” where the wealthier residents have access to electricity and often rent it out to others. For $2 per month, residents can rent electricity, which includes two light bulbs – and that’s it. Cooking is done using charcoal or wood. For 20 cents, you can take a shower in one of the communal bathrooms located throughout the slum.

One of the buildings that offers a magnificent view of all of Nairobi is Kenya International Conference Center (KICC). A must-visit. Located in the very heart of the city, this building offers an incredible view of the greater city and the surrounding hills. A landmark of Kenyan architecture, it is not only a hub for business and political events but also a popular tourist destination for those who want to see Nairobi in all its grandeur.

Nairobi Kenya, like many other Africans towns, is highly divided when it comes to living conditions. On one side, there are incredible villas worth 3 to 4 million euros, luxurious neighborhoods, and lavish hotels. On the other, there are slums like Kibera, where it is not uncommon to see people sleeping on the ground. In wealthy districts, it is normal to see the military on the streets. Literally next to every hotel. Fences in affluent areas are usually lined with barbed wire, and hotels and villas have private security.

One of the most fascinating traditions in Nairobi happens on Sundays. Residents dress in their finest clothes and gather in the city center. They take pictures because they lack mobile phones or have low-quality cameras. The streets are full of photographers offering professional photography services. For a small fee, photographers capture high-quality portraits.

Nairobi Kenya gastronomy

If you have the chance to visit Nairobi, don’t miss the Carnivore restaurant. It is a true gastronomic destination with a unique atmosphere. The most special feature is how the food and local specialties are served. At Carnivore, you can taste various meats, including exotic ones like crocodile and ostrich meatballs. For meat lovers, this place is a paradise with an adventurous African dining experience. The presentation, flavors, and aromas fully immerse you in the local culture. Besides the food, you will experience African traditions and hospitality. The restaurant’s ambiance will make your visit to Nairobi unforgettable.

Before starting your African journey, keep one thing in mind. Hotel standards are not exactly the same as in Europe. Luxury safari lodges and glamping camps offer comfort and stunning surroundings. However, in Africa, you might encounter some uninvited guests. For example, lizards and small reptiles in your room—just a reminder you’re in Africa! If you expect air-conditioned, carefree rooms, prepare for an “authentic” nature experience. You might get a visit from a monkey, a bird, or even a friendly gecko. So, if you’re familiar with safari life, expect surprises along the way. Africa is a marvel, but not always a perfect five-star experience! 😉
